I've b een trying to comment here w/o much luck but will try one more time because I can be stubborn. Maybe it didn't like the hyperlinks to relevant blogposts I had on this.

I love, love, love this book. I received it after commenting on Kathleen's Cushman's post on homework as deliberate practice. She actually sent me a complimentary with one of the best compliments in my life - "Thank you for making your good thinking public". That's what you're doing here. Keep it up.

Excellent points, Lorna! I couldn't agree with you more, as a parent and an educator. We have more and more staff using blogs to let parents know what the kids did in school and many parents have commented that this has really helped them feel connected and know what they might do at home to support the learning. I know it isn't a solution for all parents, but it is a start to a more meaningful connection between home and school.

Joan, Thanks for adding your comments. Although I am a VP, I also teach for .5 of my assignment and I am also revisiting some of the typical homework assignments I give. Best wishes as you start up.

A breath of fresh air Shannon. Can you add communicating this to your parents. I have often been frustrated when homework is used as a connection to home and parents are asked to help. Not too hard when it is listening to reading or using flash cards. Moving up the grade level - the expectations that schools and parents put upon parents to fill the role of a teacher fuels resentment and disrupts positive relationships that parents have with their children. Love to see a synopsis of this post in a school handbook.

I love love love your post and I must read this book! Thank you for articulating and sharing some key ideas about homework. I am slowly trying to change the way I give homework, as I must abide by the expectations of my school, but it's time for change! Thank you so much!
